Today is my blog’s (Pardesh Baata) birthday. It’s been one year since I started this site last year on the occassion of nepalease new year. And with this opportunity, I would like to thank to all my blog readers, visitors, relatives and friends, who always supports and gave good suggestions on blogging to encourage me . But unable to update it regularly, so sorry u all…….

Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, a study by an award-winning cancer expert has concluded. He says people should avoid using them wherever possible and that governments and the mobile phone industry must take “immediate steps” to reduce exposure to their radiation.

The study, by Dr Vini Khurana, is the most devastating indictment yet published of the health risks.

It draws on growing evidence – exclusively reported in the IoS in October – that using handsets for 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancer. Cancers take at least a decade to develop, invalidating official safety assurances based on earlier studies which included few, if any, people who had used the phones for that long.

Earlier this year, the French government warned against the use of mobile phones, especially by children. Germany also advises its people to minimise handset use, and the European Environment Agency has called for exposures to be reduced.

Professor Khurana – a top neurosurgeon who has received 14 awards over the past 16 years, has published more than three dozen scientific papers – reviewed more than 100 studies on the effects of mobile phones. He has put the results on a brain surgery website, and a paper based on the research is currently being peer-reviewed for publication in a scientific journal.

He admits that mobiles can save lives in emergencies, but concludes that “there is a significant and increasing body of evidence for a link between mobile phone usage and certain brain tumours”. He believes this will be “definitively proven” in the next decade.

Noting that malignant brain tumours represent “a life-ending diagnosis”, he adds: “We are currently experiencing a reactively unchecked and dangerous situation.” He fears that “unless the industry and governments take immediate and decisive steps”, the incidence of malignant brain tumours and associated death rate will be observed to rise globally within a decade from now, by which time it may be far too late to intervene medically.

“It is anticipated that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbestos and smoking,” says Professor Khurana, who told the IoS his assessment is partly based on the fact that three billion people now use the phones worldwide, three times as many as smoke. Smoking kills some five million worldwide each year, and exposure to asbestos is responsible for as many deaths in Britain as road accidents.

Late last week, the Mobile Operators Association dismissed Khurana’s study as “a selective discussion of scientific literature by one individual”. It believes he “does not present a balanced analysis” of the published science, and “reaches opposite conclusions to the WHO and more than 30 other independent expert scientific reviews”.

For the past 20 years, researchers working for the Boston Retinal Implant Project have been developing a bionic eye implant that could restore sight for individuals who have age-related blindness.

The implant builds on the development of miniaturized electronics technology. A small chip is surgically implanted behind the retina at the back of the eyeball, and an ultra-thin wire strengthens the damaged  optic nerve. The wire transmits light and images to the brain’s vision system for normal processing.

Other than the implanted chip and wire, most of the device sits outside the eye. Individuals would wear special glasses that contain a tiny battery-powered camera and a transmitter that sends images to the chip behind the retina.

The chip is enclosed in a titanium casing, making it water-proof and corrosion-proof, and will hopefully last for at least 10 years inside the eye.

As the researchers explain, the bionic eye would only work for individuals who once had sight, since the brain must know how to process visual information. The optic nerve must also be at least partly functional. In many individuals that are born blind, the optic nerve has never been used, and the vision part of the brain focuses on other abilities, such as hearing and touch.

Nevertheless, many people could potentially benefit from the technology. Age-related macular generation is the leading cause of blindness in the industrialized world, with about 2 million Americans suffering from the condition. The device could also help individuals suffering from retinitis pigmentosa (a genetic condition), but it would not work for patients with glaucoma.

The researchers aren’t sure exactly how much the device could help, either. It definitely won’t restore perfect vision, but it will hopefully give people a sense of their surroundings. One day, the technology might enable people to recognize faces and facial expressions.

“The thing is to significantly improve the quality of life for blind patients,” said Joseph Rizzo of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, who has co-directed the project with MIT’s John Wyatt since 1988. “What level of achievement that would actually be is hard to know. The idea of not having to use the white cane – to walk around, find the sidewalk, not run into a telephone pole, not walk into a car. Being able to navigate safely in an unfamiliar environment, that’s the big topic.”

One of Rizzo’s patients, Chris Leghorn, has Leber’s Amaurosis, a degenerative disease of the retina, and is progressively losing her vision.

“The one thing that’s really important is that sometimes the smallest improvement can make a big difference in your life,” she said. “Small improvements should not be seen as not good enough. When you have limited vision, a small amount is big. When you lose a small amount of vision, it’s big. So I can only imagine how gaining a tiny part of it back would be for me.”

This summer, the researchers plan to test the implants on animals. Within the next few years, they hope to start doing human surgeries.

The Boston Retinal Implant Project consists of 36 researchers from several institutions, including MIT, the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and the V.A. Medical Center in Boston.

Those frustratingly frantic searches for mislaid car keys or mobile phones could soon be a thing of the past.

Japanese scientists have invented a pair of intelligent glasses that remembers where people last saw their keys, handbag, iPod or mobile phone.

The spectacles – which come with a built in camera, display screen and computer brain – can even identify unfamiliar plants or faces.

The Smart Goggles contain a compact video camera which films everything the wearer looks at – and a viewfinder which fits snugly in front of the right lens.

The glasses are connected to a small, but smart computer processor worn on the back which can learn to recognise shapes extremely quickly.

To use the glasses, the wearer first wanders around a house or workplace for an hour or so, looking at the objects he or she may later want to find in a hurry.

Each time the camera focuses on a object – such as a set of keys, a mobile phone or a purse – the wearer says the name aloud. The name is then recorded and stored into the memory.

Once the names have been programmed in, the glasses will try to find the right name for any object they come across. The names appear in small type on the viewfinder.

If they are unable to recognise an object they make a guess and – if they get it wrong – learn from their mistakes.

At some point in the future, if the wearer is trying to find their keys in a hurry, they simply name the object.

The glasses search its video memory and show its last known location on the display.

In a demonstration at the university last week, the team were able to programme in the names and identity of 60 everyday objects, including a compact disc, a hammer, a potted begonia and a mobile phone.

Prof Kuniyoshi believes the invention could become a useful memory aid for the elderly. The technology could also be useful for people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

The high speed, image recognition technology could also help develop robots – like the Terminator androids from the science fiction series – that have human like abilities.

And it could also be used as an educational tool. If given the right programming, it could allow wearers to walk through gardens, stare and unfamiliar plants and find out their names instantly.

More sophisticated versions could also help people who are bad at remembering names get through awkward social situations.

The invention does have flaws. It cannot cope with family members who insist on hiding or moving objects. And it struggles to cope with objects placed in unusual positions.

And the prototype version is still too bulky and obtrusive to use. However Prof Kuniyoshi said it should be possible to shrink the camera and viewfinder down to a more sensible, and fashionable, size within a few years

Reincarnation??? I don’t know how it could be possible? on these days…..  On my November’s articles, people believed on reincarnation of God in the most parts of India as well as in Nepal. In Hindu Mythology, reincarnation is possible but I don’t believed on these, do you????

Fuel cell maker Angstrom Power and cell phone maker Motorola have teamed up to create a prototype mobile phone that runs on a hydrogen fuel cell. Hydrogen is produced–by cracking water molecules–with a desktop fueling station and then inserted into a metal hydride storage container on the phone, says Aron Levitz, manager of business development for Angstrom. When the hydrogen molecules pass through a membrane in the fuel cell, electrons are stripped away and get diverted to run the phone.

The two companies are trotting the phone to various trade shows. Start-up Angstrom has received investments from of Chrysalix Ventures.

A number of companies have been working on miniature fuel cells for portable electronics for a while, but nearly all of them run on methanol. Toshiba, for instance, last year at the Ceatec electronics show in Japan showed off a methanol fuel-cell powered portable TV. Using hydrogen has its advantages and disadvantages. For one thing, you have to harvest the hydrogen yourself. With methanol fuel cells, you just pour in the methanol.

But on the other hand, with a hydrogen fuel cell, you never have to go to the store to get fuel feedstock. You get it out of the faucet. Basically, you can think of it as a water-powered phone.

The water-to-hydrogen generator can also be powered by solar panels, making the phone about as green as you can get. Horizon Fuel Cell’s H2 racer, a toy hydrogen car, runs on solar-generated hydrogen. It’s also good to see more experimentation in storing hydrogen in a solid metal tank, rather than a compressed tank. Trulite is doing something similar with its portable generator. Hydrogen proponents point out that, although the hydrogen highway may not get built, the small molecule can be used to provide power to boats, fork lifts, and electronics.

And for those of you worried about blowing up, remember, hydrogen didn’t burn the Hindenburg. It was the paint that caused it to go up in flames.
